Christopher McFall (32) of Townhill Road, Portglenone was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful encashment of Social Fund totalling £125.
Hello and welcome.
This site has been established primarily to act as a repository of information relating to individuals convicted of benefit fraud in Northern Ireland.
The Government Department charged with the detection and prosecution of those suspected of benefit fraud, the Dept of Social Development (DSD) had, until very recently, been happy to simply report convictions in an entirely anonymous fashion akin to “A man has from Belfast has been found guilty of benefit fraud. The 22 year old had been claiming…..”.
This protectionist attitude was challenged by way of a Freedom Of Information (FOI) requst via the whatdotheknow.com site which ultimately resulted in DSD reviewing their policy and, sensibly in our opinion, deciding to publish the details of those convicted in the public domain via their website.
DSD have announced that the details they publish will be removed from their site one month after publication so we have decided to retain a historical record / reference of all convictions published via this site.
We also intend maintaining a running total of benefit monies identified via conviction as having been claimed fraudulently and we will seek the assistance of the DSD in publishing sums recouped in relation to any such convictions and the methodology behind same.
