Christopher McFall (32) of Townhill Road, Portglenone was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful encashment of Social Fund totalling £125.
The Social Security Agency Financial Investigation Unit obtained a Confiscation Order to the value of £48,880 against Louise Cowan (39) of Spruce Meadows, Londonderry at Londonderry Crown Court today.
Ms Cowan on 12 September 2011, pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit while failing to declare she was living with her partner. On 19 October 2011 she was sentenced to 180 hours community service.
At today’s confiscation hearing, the Court agreed that the loss to the Department through the defendant’s criminal activity amounted to £60,124. The court also agreed that the defendant has assets available to her totalling £48,880. The Confiscation Order was granted for £48,880.
The Confiscation Order is to be satisfied by 20 March 2013. If the Confiscation Order is not satisfied by this date, Ms Cowan must serve a sentence of 18 months imprisonment.
